Chairman Cancer Prevention Coalition Anti-Aging Medication & Monsanto Milk Are Major Risks of Breast Cancer Press Release May 19, 2003 Anti-aging medication with genetically-engineered human growth hormone (HGH) poses major risks of breast cancer. Equally unrecognized are risks of drinking unlabeled milk from cows injected with Monsanto's genetically-engineered bovine growth hormone (BGH), marketed since 1994 to increase milk production. These risks are especially critical in view of the escalating incidence of breast cancer, particularly in post-meno-pausal women, over recent decades.
I think that human civilization will someday have a huge price to pay for relying on genetically-engineered crops like GM soybeans and GM corn while ignoring the tremendous importance of agricultural biodiversity. The very idea of allowing corporations to patent and "own" the DNA of seeds used to grow staple food crops is, in my view, a crime against nature that will only lead to disaster.
But in private, it is taking advantage of a genetically-engineered model that is higher in saturated fat and lower in the rancidity-prone superpolyunsaturated omega-3s. The new oil is particularly useful in baked goods and confections.39 Another new soybean called "Satelite" (pronounced "Sat-e-light") has a lower saturated fat content and low polyunsaturated omega-3 levels but 40 percent more monounsaturated fat. This variety was designed to cut out most of the unstable omega-3s and help manufacturers reduce the levels of trans fat needed in their final products.
From every vantage point save that of Monsanto, the genetically-engineered growth hormone rBGH is a bad and dangerous idea, a conclusion we reached as early as 1993 when the FDA approved it. In our view, rBGH is a bio-technological solution to a problem that does not exist. rBGH is not needed to increase America's supply of dairy products. Over supply by factory farms is a problem, not an answer. • rBGH is not needed to improve the health of dairy cows. The manufacturer's own label warns that the growth hormone can trigger a wide range of harmful effects.

These risks are especially critical in view of the escalating incidence of breast cancer, particularly in post-meno-pausal women, over recent decades. As critical is the fact that women have still not been warned of both these avoidable risks.
Chairman Cancer Prevention Coalition Threatens Public Health Joint Press Release with Ronnie Cummins, National Director, Organic Consumers Association February 4, 2005 Last month, the Hudson Institute's agribusiness-funded Center for Global Food Issues launched an aggressive "Milk is Milk" campaign to assure consumers that there is no difference between natural milk and that from cows injected with Monsanto's genetically-engineered or recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) to increase milk production and profitability.
Although the FDA advisory-committee determined this new tomato to be safe, several of the participants expressed concern about biotech regulations for future genetically-engineered foods: The FDA does not plan to require companies to notify them when a new, genetically-engineered product is going to be marketed; companies will be required to apprise the FDA only if a new food differs substantially from the original or poses any health risk. Many of the biotech crops are being genetically-engineered for herbicide tolerance. Calgene is testing the chemical weedkiller bro-moxynil on cottonseed.
In this country, we continue to subsidize sugar and genetically-engineered corn on a grand scale. We continue to allow the drug companies and junk food companies to exploit consumers and brainwash people into thinking they need chemicals or junk foods in order to be healthy, feel good or be popular. We have a system that is dominated by evil industries that really have no purpose other than to generate profits. These are the food, drug, cosmetics and chemical industries, primarily.
The FDA has given permission to sell genetically-engineered Bovine Growth Hormone/BGH (also called Bovine SomaTrophin/BST) in milk in April 1993, effective in November 1993, to increasemilkproduction 15-20-40%; although other cow hormones are raised, some as much as 1000%; including hormone IgF-I which in humans causes acromegaly of enlarged hands, feet, nose, and chin, and abnormal pituitary; along with glucose intolerance and hypertension. Absorption of BGH into the blood of humans causes Nitrogen retention.

A concern is that once these genetically-engineered crops are in widespread use, not only might more herbicides be used, but herbicide-tolerant genes could spread, and ultimately result in the need to develop and use more herbicides to control herbicide-resistant weeds. Similarly, biotechnology could improve animal production by creating breeds that are leaner or more resistant to disease, or by genetically engineering better vaccines to prevent animal disease.
In dealing with technologically novel products like genetically-engineered hormones, "lack of definitive scientific evidence" is part of what makes the story controversial. "Is there smoking-gun, ironclad evidence available today that drinking milk from hormone-treated cows will lead to cancer in you or your children?" asks Wilson. "No. Many scientists will tell you because this is a drug injected into animals and not directly into humans the testing of its effects on milk-drinkers has never been thorough enough to know for sure.
In 1985, Kinsman discovered that Monsanto and other companies were injecting genetically-engineered growth hormone into cows to make them produce more milk. He began picketing the University of Wisconsin to inform students that their favorite campus ice cream was made from hormone test milk. This small protest launched an international struggle which is still ongoing to protect the rights of farmers and consumers. Nor has Madison's locally-led activism been limited to local issues.
The hormone in question is genetically-engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), the flagship product in Monsanto's campaign to take command of the ultra-high-stakes biotechnology industry. Injections of rBGH (sold under the brand name Posilac®) induce higher milk production in dairy cows, but critics warn of potential health risks to both cows and humans. The Florida dispute offers a rare look inside the newsroom at the way stories get spun and censored.
Many of the biotech crops are being genetically-engineered for herbicide tolerance. Calgene is testing the chemical weedkiller bro-moxynil on cottonseed. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, bromoxynil causes birth defects in laboratory animals and may subject farm workers to a similar risk. FDA Commissioner David Kessler claims: "We're going to assure the safety of all foods, whether produced by traditional breeding or genetic engineering." How can the FDA possibly ensure the safety of unlabeled bio-engineered foods that look the same as ordinary fruits and vegetables?
In April of 1994, the FDA's food-advisory committee approved the first genetically-engineered tomato, the MacGregor Flavr Savr, for consumer consumption. The "Flavr Savr" is supposed to last longer than natural tomatoes.
She was calling as part of a frenetic MBD campaign to gather "intelligence" about groups opposed to the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), a controversial new genetically-engineered drug being injected into dairy cows. The Mutations Industry Monsanto, the developer of rBGH, is one of the world's largest transnational corporations, manufacturing a wide range of chemicals, drugs and other high-tech products—many of which are dangerous or lethal.
Founded in 1972, CAST is funded by hundreds of companies invested in genetically-engineered foods, agricultural chemicals, food additives and corporate factory farming, including Dow, General Mills, Land O'Lakes, Ciba-Geigy, Archer Daniels Midland, Monsanto, Philip Morris, and Uniroyal.43 According to O'Dwyer's PR Services, Allen Finch personally works to establish CAST as "the source for public policy-makers and news media on environmental issues."44 CAST is a classic industry front group claiming "to provide current, unbiased scientific information concerning food and agriculture.
Companies such as Upjohn, Chiron and Bio-Technology General are experimenting with genetically-engineered forms of SOD. (Frederick R. Adler, a director of MSKCC, told Business Week, 9/9/85, that German doctors used SOD to ease his own joint pain. He was so impressed, he founded Bio-Technology.) Free radical scavengers are of interest to cancer therapists, not least because they might counter the free radical damage that is the result of radiation therapy. In China, scientists measured SOD activity in the blood of cancer patients.
See Chapter 4 for information on the individual fats and oils.) The medium-chain saturated fatty acids are caprylic acid (8 carbons), capric acid (10 carbons), and lauric acid (12 carbons). (Some fats and oils experts also consider myristic acid (14 carbons) a medium-chain saturated fatty acid, but it is generally included with long-chain saturated fatty acids in tables.) (See the General Glossary for details of these fatty acids.) These short- and medium-chain saturated fatty acids are not deposited to any extent in the adipose tissue.
Bristol-Myers Squibb that produce human mother's milk protein; potatoes that kill pests by producing their own insecticide; slow-ripening tomatoes; virus-resistant squash; herbicide-tolerant cotton and soybean plants; growth hormone for pigs; and meat from cloned cattle. Beginning in 1986, however, rBGH faced organized international resistance spearheaded by Jeremy Rifkin's Foundation on Economic Trends. The issue attracted other rBGH opponents including the Consumers Union, the Humane Society of the US, Food and Water, Inc., and grassroots farmer organizations.
